A 69-year-old man from Mtendere Compound, accused of defiling a teenage girl with an intellectual disability, has pleaded not guilty.
The victim, whose parents were former tenants of Edward Phiri, had regularly visited her friends at the old house.
According to a statement from the police, on January 22, Phiri allegedly sent the victim to buy cigarettes and then took advantage of her.
Phiri has pleaded not guilty to the charge of defilement of an imbecile, contrary to Zambian laws.
His lawyers have applied for bail pending trial, citing Phiri’s fixed residence, ability to secure sureties, and willingness to abide by bail conditions.
However, the state has requested more time to respond to the bail application.
The court has adjourned the matter until February 17 for the state’s response to the bail application, with the trial set to commence on March 7.
