The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has yet to state its intentions regarding national team head coach Avram Grant’s contract, which expired last December, the National Sports Council of Zambia (NSCZ) has said.
NSCZ Chief Executive Officer Sombwa Musunsa stated that the council is still awaiting an update from FAZ on the way forward regarding the experienced 70-year-old Israeli coach’s contract.
“FAZ has not provided us with an update on the contractual issues regarding the national team coach. We are waiting for FAZ to update us,” Musunsa said.
Musunsa added that the NSCZ, along with the public, has become concerned about Grant’s current contractual situation.
“We know it’s an internal matter, but knowing how football is, it becomes a national matter, and there is public interest. The National Sports Council of Zambia also has an interest in knowing what is happening,” he said.
The NSCZ has since concluded plans to engage FAZ over the matter, with the Chipolopolo set to enter crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification assignments next month.
“We will follow the developments closely and engage FAZ to provide us with information regarding the two coaches who manage the men’s and women’s teams,” said Musunsa.
The former Chelsea coach has been out of the country and did not attend the 2025 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations draw, which was held in Rabat, Morocco, a fortnight ago.
Grant was appointed as Chipolopolo coach in December 2022 on a two-year contract and has guided the senior national team to back-to-back qualifications for the AFCON.
