Chipolopolo’s World Cup Qualifier Against Congo in Limbo

Must read

The Chipolopolo are set to be gifted three points in their next 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Congo Brazzaville, who are unlikely to honor this month’s international fixtures.

Congo is unable to compete in international football competitions after the FIFA Council suspended the country’s FA, FECAFOOT, due to government interference.

The football crisis in Congo, which stems from tensions between the country’s Ministry of Sports and dismissed FECAFOOT president Jean-Blaise Mayolas’ executive committee, remains unresolved, while the world football governing body will only convene to preside over the matter at the FIFA Congress in May.

Chipolopolo are now set to be awarded three vital points over Congo, with the match scheduled for 24th March in Brazzaville, as well as the latter’s away fixture against Tanzania, both set to be called off.

Chipolopolo beat Congo 4-2 in the first leg played at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in November 2023 and currently sit fourth in Group E of the World Cup qualifiers with just 3 points.

Nonetheless, Avram Grant is preparing to name his squad for the upcoming international friendly encounter against Russia, to be played in Moscow on 25th March 2025.
