The trial of Given Katuta, Chiengi Member of Parliament accused of threatening a Times of Zambia journalist, has been adjourned to March 18 after the prosecution failed to proceed with the trial.
The adjournment was granted despite objections from the defense team, who argued that the prosecution was not ready to proceed with the case.
The prosecution requested an adjournment, citing new information that had arisen, which they needed time to address.
However, the defense team, led by Benjamin Mwelwa, opposed the application, stating that the prosecution had consistently shown a lack of readiness to prosecute the case since 2023.
Lusaka Magistrate Idah Phiri cautioned the prosecution about the delay, emphasizing the importance of resolving the matter efficiently.
The magistrate reluctantly granted the adjournment, ordering the prosecution to ensure that all witnesses, including George Phiri from the National Assembly, attend the next session without fail.
Katuta pleaded not guilty to threatening violence and causing injury to Times of Zambia photojournalist Henry Chunza at the Parliament premises on July 21, 2023, around 09:00 hours.
